Wonder Year

Today I had a post go up on Rookie which was kind of a.. 'best of' from my scrapbook. I kept this sort of visual journal all year and I scanned my favourite pages for this post. I also wrote something about what purpose it serves in my life ya know. You can view all 35 of the pages and read my little motivating speech here!: http://rookiemag.com/2012/12/wonder-year/

In other news, I was doing work today, or rather making silly collages that made me smile.

Near, Far

Another Christmas Day is over, I just got home from LUNCH (It is now 10.44pm) But, that's my family for you, I do love it but I am exhausted. Barbara Streisand's 'The Way We Were' just came on the radio and I'm dying because I absolutely adore it to pieces as well as the movie. I'm definitely getting into 'reflection' mode now that this year has come to and end and this song is so longingly appropriate. I actually would say that I have experienced the most changes in my life ever this year, and it's been largely really positive.

Now I am launching into REAL LIFE, post Uni. Here I have to quote Dr. Seuss in his book 'Oh The Places You'll Go':

"Congratulations!
Today is your day.
You're off to great places!
You're off and away!"

I hope you had a lovely Christmas spent with loved ones and lunches that turned into dinners. : )

Yes Sir That's My Baby

I am so excited to be able to share with you these tarot cards I collaborated on with Eleanor Hardwick for Rookie this month! I posted my favourites above, to view the whole set visit http://rookiemag.com/2012/12/destiny-unknown/

Boring anecdotes on the above photos: I am obsessed with gift wrapping. This year I really wanted to get like holographic paper but I couldn't find any so I got holographic curling ribbon and used fluorescent pink and red paper with silver cellophane. Then I got some round shiny pink gift tags and stuck holly stickers on them. NBD.

The great thing about making those Tarot cards is that I now have my own real life ones too and I had them laid out on my bed this morning.

BOOK: VALI MYERS 'NIGHT FLOWER' I bought this for myself when I was Christmas shopping for other people. It is amazing and so reasonably priced for being the most amazing thing ever. If you don't know who Vali is check out this past post http://www.minnagilligan.com/2012/03/vali-of-dolls.html Seriously, if you have a Frida Kahlo, Florence and the Machine, Bat For Lashes loving friend/relative they will love this book and thus then love Vali. It is a great Christmas gift, only $35.00, I got mine at the NGV bookshop :)

UH I tried marbling this afternoon with my marbling kit but it didn't even work and I got so sad. I even followed all the instructions so I don't even know what I did wrong. It looked great in the water though.

Download the playlist here: http://www.mediafire.com/?5kx73ofgw03zo

Above is a playlist for you to get in the Christmas Spirit! I most certainly am. Loud family, food, singing along to the radio, hellish shopping centres, Christmas activities, buying gifts. I love buying gifts especially, I find it really enjoyable. When I was little my Dad would always be too busy with work and have to do his Christmas shopping on Christmas Eve and my sisters and I would go with him to the *big* shopping centre or even to the *big smoke*. I specifically remember one year where Dad asked me to pick out a lipstick for Mum and I would have been about 6. The one I chose was a really dark almost gothic red that I thought she'd like... We'd wait politely behind Dad at the perfume counters, shadow him through the crowds, sales assistants would comment on either a) How quiet and good I was being or b) My hair colour.

Although an anxious child, looking back I kind of enjoyed these rushed family bonding sessions, and now I really enjoy taking the train alone into the city really close to Christmas and doing my Christmas shopping. There's a great energy in the city a few days before Christmas. If you remain positive and not stressed about the whole thing, it's actually really enjoyable. The world doesn't end if you don't get the perfect gift for someone, what's important is spending time with people and being thankful that they're actually there for you to buy gifts for you know. Christmas is supposed to be relaxing and enjoyable and this year I am adamant in keeping it that way!

Marbleous

This morning after a lovely breakfast at Small Block cafe' (served by a very attentive waiter named Louis) I wandered past Monk House Design on Lygon Street where they had this ensemble in the front window. I died. After researching, these items are by a label called Verner. That floaty, subtlety psychedelic *hand dyed!* marble print is amazing. The shop was closed so I had to go home empty handed... but it did send me on a internet trawl for amazing marbled pictures.. oh and turns out I can buy the label online... uh oh.

Marble pants by Lisa Ho (Wanted for ages but too $$$) :(
I seriously think for Christmas I might ask for marbling stuff and some silk or something so I can try some hand marbling. I have already been planning on collaborating with my sister (who can sew) and making tops from fabric I have designed. I think this would be a fun step for me and have been thinking about it for the whole year now and finally I have some time to do it. It also may be preventative in me spending all my money on clothes.

A beautiful but *irrelevant* orchid that was in Mum's shop
I was so busy yesterday. I worked at Art Guide and we moved into a new office where I have my own DESK. It's actually amazing because I could like get a gold name plate and like framed photographs of my family facing me and stuff. I have never really had my *own* desk at a job before (One that I don't share with someone else) So I was really excited. After work we had big office adult drinks that I am not really equipped for what with watching The Brady Bunch all the time and being generally immature but it was pretty fun. THEN I went to the ACCA opening and THEN went to a friend's house for a BBQ. Louis and I later found ourselves sleeping on the floor on a makeshift pillow bed pretending that we were camping. I dreamt that I had a really big amazing antique record player that had an inbuilt photobooth (?) and I took it to a party (Transport wasn't really an issue even though it was like 10 meters long...) and someone broke it, and I was so genuinely upset. The night before that I dreamt that I had a baby and I left it in a corridor I thought would be safe but then it was gone and I felt really really sick. Moral of these dreams.. don't trust my stuff with other people? Don't lend my real life inferior record player to a friend? All of these are possible. In the meantime maybe I should go to bed - I hope my dreams are marbled.

Kate Nash

Kate Nash wrote this month's ROOKIE theme song and I got to design the 'cover art' using a photograph of Kate Nash by the lovely Petra Collins. Sorry this is such a quick post, just had to show you yet another super vague association I have with a celeb, WOO! Listen to it here http://rookiemag.com/2012/12/theme-song-december-2012/ : )

I WONDER

This week I have been busy doing nothing, which is possible if you have company and spend all morning in bed and have breakfast cooked for you and go to cafes and drink orange juice and go to parties and see movies and eat ice cream. It's very possible. I have actually sort of relaxed this week which is rare for me. Right now I am watching a show called 'Swamp People' where these guys go and hunt 'gators' on the bayous and stuff which is pretty wild. This is the life. (Vaguely).

I saw 'Searching For Sugar Man' the other day! Which I obviously had been wanting to see for ages and now I have and I really enjoyed it. There's nothing like a great soundtrack to heighten a cinematic experience especially when the cinematic experience is about the soundtrack you know. 'I Wonder' is probably my favourite Rodriguez song right now, but I go through phases depending on how I'm feeling in my life and stuff...
